When joining sports medicine, you do not know what to expect and believe that everything in that class will be hard but that is not the case, here is something to expect when joining sports medicine. When you take sports medicine, you will have to do it for all your trimesters and if you want to continue you can do it for next year and take classes 4, 5, and 6 but if it is your first time in sports medicine and you seem interested in sports medicine you can talk about it with your counselor or you can try it out for 2 days and if you don’t like it you can try to change it but these classes are very competitive to go in, so be sure that you don’t like it or else you could be missing out on it. This also counts for a health credit if you do not want to take a health class and want to take sports medicine instead.
When starting sports medicine, you will have to fill out a syllabus and sign a contract, that contract is nothing bad but is a contract that will protect students’ identity when they get injured meaning, you are not allowed to speak about who they are and how or what injuries they got. After that, you will have vocabulary every Monday and will have a test every Friday about that vocabulary and during the week you will take note of new things like how to properly treat a wound, adult CPR, first aid, etc. After every unit, you will have a unit test like any other class that you have and you will also have to complete 10 hours on the field helping the students that got hurt.
When taking adult CPR, you will be able to get a certificate, but it is optional, and the school will pay so nothing will come out of your pockets. The exam to get certified is 2 exams a written exam and a physical exam which demonstrates how you do CPR on a manikin that will be your person but do not worry Mrs. Ihly will show you how to do it and will let you practice well days before the exam. The written exam will be what you learn in class but if you want to get certified you cannot miss any day when doing the CPR lesson. In Sports Medicine 2 the class covers injuries on ankles, knee, hip, elbow, hand, wrist, and finger. This will also include how to wrap and tape those areas. Also, the students will have lap days when they can do fun activities and try new things that they have never done before. In trimester 3 the class will go over alcohol, nutrition, tobacco, drugs, and sex education which are the things that health class learns about. Overall, I hope this helps anyone who needs a little push to make a decision to join the sports medicine class.
