Schools have always taught the current generation that we need to learn to be independent and not always rely on others for help of course help was always offered to provide kids/students with an opportunity to receive clarification on something if there was any confusion about a certain topic, but schools use certain methods of teaching that make students think that it isn’t normal to need help but instead do everything on your own because there’s no other way to prove that you specifically know something if you work in a group. School tests us on a variety of topics and usually, these tests, quizzes, or assignments in general are conducted by having each student do their own work separately, that is the way things are done all throughout our school life but there’s an issue/flaw with that method of teaching.
School is essentially just the place that teaches kids the basics of life and is the starting point of our education, school is there to prepare us for everything that life will throw at us in the future. But, with that in mind if school is trying to help us prepare for the future why does it teach us that we have to work alone? in the real world after you get out of high school and become an adult you will eventually have to find a job and with a job comes responsibilities, but most jobs are a business, and most businesses aren’t run alone are they? so if we are supposed to work together all the time when it comes to most jobs then why does the school system ever since we were kids plant the idea in our heads that we have to do everything on our own if the only way to achieve big things and get things done is by working with others?
Pasco High student, Alex Rivera, says this about the methods of teaching, “I say to teach them alone because then they won’t rely on people to pick up the slack you know? And it helps make them more independent, sometimes pairing kids together isn’t a good idea because they just slack off and get distracted. But at the same time, it’s good so kids can get to know their buddy’s you know, make friends, and have fun instead of being stressed etc.”
Brandon Aguilar, another student from Pasco High says, “Personally I find working alone gives me better results than collaborating with others. School does, however, teach fundamentals and practices for collaboration, which we will need later in life.”
Lastly, Jose Alvarado at Pasco High says, “To be a successful student, it’s proven that working with others boosts your grades and understanding more than it would working alone. it’s also a valuable life skill needed in many careers. but working alone can probably teach you how to be independent.”
If all of us worked independently the world wouldn’t be as it is today because there are jobs that can only be done by working with others such as most businesses that deal with currency/money/trade, any job that revolves around building things, and guess what our entire government because the only way that we can maintain order in our country is by establishing rules that aren’t made by just one person but suggested, voted, and agreed on by all of us. if one person did everything then we would probably still be in the Stone Age, but considering that factor the only way that we can evolve as a whole is by communicating, sharing, and helping each other in times of need.
