Do you remember the viral ice bucket challenge from when you were young? Do you remember seeing videos of people doing the challenge from all those years ago? Many of you may not remember what the original ice bucket challenge was intended for. Back in the summer of 2014, the ice bucket challenge was created to raise awareness and donations for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, otherwise known as ALS. Many people participated in the challenge from around the world and posted videos for the whole world to see in the name of spreading awareness for ALS. The trend ended up raising more than 220 million in donations from around the world.
Now, the ice bucket challenge has returned with a new purpose: to bring awareness and bring in donations for mental health. Over this past weekend, many teenagers have shared and posted videos of themselves and their friends or family members doing the challenge, and it hasn’t stopped since. The trend has seen a massive resurgence in popularity once again. Some people may ask, What are the rules for the ice bucket challenge? For those people who may have forgotten the rules, here is a quick run-down:
- Nominate 2-5 people to join by tagging them in your videos.
- Donate to the Active Minds and #SpeakYourMIND fundraising page.
- Share your video, using the hashtag #SpeakYourMIND and tag #uscmind.
How did the trend come back? The USCMind Instagram page made a post on their page promoting the challenge once again to bring awareness to mental health. Some may wonder, what are the rules for this challenge? Their motivations were to break the stigma around mental health, advocate for more suicide prevention efforts, promote daily mindfulness, and raise funds for Active Minds to promote mental health awareness in younger adults. All of this is for future communities to be supportive and build a more comfortable environment to speak about their mental health.
