I gathered information from Pasco High School students about what they think of the WASCO website. The majority of the students have not heard of WASCO. Most students who know WASCO know it through Journalism or Mr. Hockaday.
I interviewed Alexa Hernandez, a Junior from PHS. One of the questions I asked was how she heard of WASCO. She stated, “I heard of WASCO through my journalism class. Mr. Hockaday spoke about it and gave us a guide on how to navigate through it.” This response should not be surprising because most past or current journalism students have heard of it.
I asked another student who has never taken a Journalism class. I interviewed David Astudillo, who is also a Junior at PHS. His response is different from Alexa’s. David stated, “Actually, no, I have not heard of WASCO.” Comparing both responses, we learn that if a student has a Journalism class, there is a higher chance they will know about it.
I again asked Alexa, “What did you think of the WASCO website the moment you got on it?” Alexa responded and said, “The WASCO website is a very interesting site for students to publish articles they thought of before. Overall, I would say it’s such a good website.”
Since Alexa has been the only person knowing what WASCO is, I decided to ask her what she thinks the WASCO website needs to work on. ” What I think the WASCO website needs is to allow users to be able to interact more with posts, an example is like giving it hearts or likes, this way it can push a story for a larger audience,” Alexa said. This idea is very interesting, many social media have a feature of giving likes or dislikes.
So we wonder how to push the website to more viewers. David Astudillo gave us an answer on a way we could reach him and more people. “Many students have an app they use daily, and one of them was popularized last year, Minga. Minga is an app that a lot of students have, and they log in almost every day. If the WASCO staff can have an ad on the front page, it would be popularized.”
With David and Alexa both responding, we can come up with an idea to push the website. If the WASCO website is at the top of Minga, we can get more views on the website. To bring interest, we can add the feature of like and dislike, and have the article at the top of the website. This way, new viewers can see the most popularized article, and so they may share it with others, and so the website can grow.
Overall, with user engagement and pushing the website out more, it can grow and reach its potential. So I asked both students one question, “If you were in charge of the website, do you think you would be able to make it grow?” Alexa responded and said, “I think with my insight knowledge of how the website works, I don’t think I would be able.” Next, David responded and said, “Yeah, I agree, I would not be able to make it grow. It takes hard work and knowledge to be able to get it where it is now.” With these honest responses we know the WASCO website is on the right path to grow, and hopefully it will soon get more updates.
