If a zombie apocalypse happened and zombies started popping up from left to right, I wondered how my Spanish teacher, Mr. Campos, would handle it. So, I sat down and asked him some random questions on how he would try to survive it.
The first question I asked was what weapon he would use and why. “A machine gun because I would be able to kill more zombies at the same time,” he said. They are commonly used in zombie apocalypse movies like World War Z and Dawn of the Dead (2004) because they allow you to take out hordes of zombies simultaneously, usually when the characters are swarmed.
The next question was what five things he would always have to survive: “A first aid kit, a lighter, water, a lantern, and a dog,” he said. While all these items are good and essential, the dog stood out the most. Some people might be hesitant to choose a dog because of the responsibility it would bring and how they would react in a situation like that, but a dog could help warn and alert you of danger and keep you company.
Then, he was asked where he would hide and why he would choose that place, “In a forest because I would be away from civilization,” he said. A forest is a wise choice because it would offer many resources and materials for building shelters, starting fires, and finding food. Also, in a city, you might have to fight other people for supplies, but in a forest, you might find what you need without as much competition. Plus, it’s a location often appearing in many zombie films, like ‘The Walking Dead,” where characters search for shelter in a forest.
Next, I asked him if he could choose three actors to try to survive with him, who he would choose and why, “Will Ferrell because he’s funny, Dwayne Johnson because he’s strong, and Liam Neeson,” he said. Will Ferrell was probably the first to come to mind, to have unserious moments in the middle of a crisis, it’s no surprise that Dwayne Johnson was chosen because of his strength, as he has many survival movies where he always plays the role of being the strong character. Liam Neeson was likely picked because of his action roles.
Another question I had was about which canned foods he would take with him, “Menudo because I like it, corn, chili, and pickled chili peppers,” he said. His food choices were tasty and filling, and the chili and corn would give energy.
Moving on, I asked who he would choose to survive with in any occupation and why. At first, he chose a scientist, but then he changed his mind. “A nurse, just in case something happens, we have a better chance of surviving,” he said. He likely chose a nurse because nurses are trained to stay calm and think clearly under pressure. In this survival scenario, having someone who can treat injuries and handle emergencies is essential.
In the end, asking him survival questions about how he would try to survive was interesting. It shows how everyone has their survival strategy, with different plans based on what they value and care about. It makes you realize everyone has their ways of dealing with things.
