We decided to interview 2 students and 2 teachers here at PHS to find out if they still take lockdowns seriously and if teachers make their students follow the procedure.
(We began by interviewing the two students, and we asked them the following questions)
1. When we have a lockdown, do teachers make you follow the procedures?
Jami C.: “When we have a lockdown, most of my teachers don’t make us follow the procedures, and they continue teaching.”
Joel D.: “When we have a lockdown, most teachers make us follow the procedure, but others don’t; it all depends on the teacher.”
2. In what way do teachers make you follow the procedures?
Jami C.: “Most teachers don’t really make us follow the procedures, but for those who do, they turn off the lights, make us go to a corner away from any windows or doors, and tell us to be quiet and not panic.”
Joel D.: “They turn off the lights and make us go in a corner mostly away from doors and windows and tell us to be quiet with no phones.”
3. Do you follow the lockdown procedures?
Jami C.: “I only follow the procedures when a teacher makes it mandatory.”
Joel D.: “I follow the rules if only the teacher tells us to.”
4. Do you still take lockdowns seriously?
Jami C.: “No, I don’t take the lockdowns seriously because most teachers make it seem like they’re not important, which makes me feel like they’re not important.”
Joel D.: “Well, if they are real, then yeah, because I don’t want to die, but if it’s fake, I don’t if the teacher doesn’t.”
5. Do your teachers allow you to continue doing your work during a lockdown?
Jami C.: “Yes, they let us continue working on work during a lockdown because they want us to be successful.”
Joel D.: “On a real lockdown, they don’t because we follow the procedures, but if it’s practice, then yeah.”
(We asked the following questions of the teachers)
1. When we have a lockdown, do you make students follow the procedures?
Mrs Alcala: “ Yes, I try to explain to them first that we need to be calm, but usually, if there is a lockdown, I tell my students whether it’s a lockdown or a drill.”
Mr Hockaday: “It depends. If I know it’s practice, we just talk about the procedures, but if I know it’s real, then yes, I will make them follow the procedures.”
2. In what way do you make the students follow the procedures?
Mrs Alcala: “ I try to tell my students to stay calm and to follow the rules for a lockdown.”
Mr Hockaday: “Throughout all my classes, I talk to my students about which corner to go to based on where there are no windows or doors.”
3. Do you follow the procedures of a lockdown?
Mrs Alcala: “ Yes I do even if it’s a drill I still follow the procedures but still continue teaching when it’s a drill.”
Mr Hockaday: “Yeah…”
4. Do students still take lockdowns seriously?
Mrs Alcala: “ I feel like my students got used to the practice every month, so they always think it’s a practice.”
Mr Hockaday: “Well, I feel like it all depends on the teacher if they make them follow the procedures, then yes.”
5. Do you make your students continue working on classwork during a lockdown announcement?
Mrs Alcala: “No, I want my students to be more focused on the lockdown than their work, but if it’s a test, then yes, my students will continue working on their work.”
Mr Hockaday: “If I know it depends on whether it is serious work, then ye,s but if it’s not, then no.”
