With sequins, soul, and a whole lot of synthesizers, the choir’s last showcase, POPvolution, dances through the decades, proving that great music never goes out of style.
On May 21st, 22nd, and 23rd, we will have a phenomenal showcase presented by our very own Pasco High School Tenth Avenue singers and choir department, directed by Mrs. Newbury.
What Is POPvolution? You may ask,
POPvolution: The Eras! It is a high-energy, full-ensemble production that takes audiences on a vibrant musical journey through the ever-evolving world of pop music. From the dawn of radio hits to today’s streaming sensations, this show highlights how the genre of pop has continually reinvented itself, shaped by shifting trends, cultural movements, and the voices of each generation.
Through performances that span from the catchy, feel-good melodies of the 1950s to the introspective and genre-blending anthems of the 2020s, the show celebrates how pop music has grown in both sound and substance. You’ll hear echoes of Motown soul, disco rhythm, synth-heavy 80s hooks, bubblegum 90s, millennial power pop, and today’s hyper pop and indie-inspired styles, each reflecting the aesthetics and emotion of its time.
But POPvolution doesn’t just showcase pop music as entertainment. It also tells how the genre has mirrored social change, embraced new technology, and given voice to identity, innovation, and rebellion. This performance explores everything from the rise of music videos to social media, from the polished harmonies of the boy band era to the raw vulnerability of today’s pop icons.
Featuring the talented Tenth Avenue singers and additional vocal ensembles from Pasco High School, the show includes intricate choreography, heartfelt solo moments, and energetic full-choir numbers. Each era is brought to life with attention to sound, movement, and attitude, offering audiences a nostalgic and forward-looking celebration of pop’s past, present, and future.
POPvolution: The Eras! It is a joyful reminder that while styles may change, pop music’s power to move us to dance, to feel, and to connect remains timeless.
Let’s hear about the background of this program from the director, Mrs. Newbury: The idea started as a jukebox, hits from decades, to celebrate music from multiple eras. But as we explored different directions, we found ourselves drawn to one particular genre: pop. From there, the theme naturally evolved into a celebration of pop music through the decades, eventually becoming what we now call POPvolution. Preparing for this show was both exciting and challenging. Each song represents a different era, so we had to think about how to reflect that musically and through choreography, costumes, and transitions. It has been a creative process that pushed us to think about the evolution of style, sound, and energy. We chose a song that represents key moments in pop music history and offers something fun and meaningful for our group to perform. we wanted a mix of well-loved throwbacks and high-energy modern hits that would be recognizable and enjoyable for all generations. We hope the audience feels the journey. Each song tells a different story in pop history, and together, they show how music brings people together across time. More then anything, we want people to leave with a smile, maybe humming a tune, and remembering how powerful music can be in connecting us all.
Packed with nostalgia, energy, and heart, POPvolution: The Eras! is more than a concert; it’s a celebration of pop music’s power to connect generations. Don’t miss this FINAL showcase from Pasco High’s talented vocalists!
