This week, I interviewed three security guards around the school campus to determine if adding an alarm was a good idea, so students would not leave during school hours.
Have you caught any students trying to leave during school hours?
Security#1: “Yes, but I try to give them warnings so I wouldn’t just get them in trouble.”
Security#2: “Yes, I see it every time I used to stop them, but now I just give them a warning or just walk near them so they won’t leave.”
Security#3: “I sometimes do, but it’s quite rare for me to see any students leave during school hours, so I really don’t do much.”
How many times do you hear the alarm go off during school hours?
Security#1: “I hear the alarm go off almost every time, but it’s mostly towards the end of class, so there is really nothing I can do about it since it’s just the end of school.”
Security#2: “I do hear it sometimes, it’s just that most of the time I’m not in that part of the school, so sometimes I hear it and sometimes I don’t.”
Security#3: “I do hear it, it’s just when the alarm goes off, it’s not near where the alarm is going off.”
Does this make fewer students skip during school hours?
Security#1: “ Honestly, I don’t even know if students have gotten better at not skipping school. I feel like when they put the alarm, the students still don’t care, so I feel like the alarms really don’t do anything.”
Security#2: “In my opinion, I think that students have gotten better at not skipping ever since the alarm was put on.“
Security#3: “I feel like the alarms sort of work because it goes off when they try or leave the school campus.”
Was it a good idea to add the alarms?
Security#1: “I feel like putting the alarms was a pretty good idea just because they do go off and also keep the school secure from keeping people from coming in, so yeah, I think it was a great idea for the alarms to be there.“
Security#2: “I think the alarms were a good idea to keep the school safe, but now that students leave the alarms so off, it is more logical that students leave.“
Security#3: “I think it was a pretty cool idea for the alarms to be added because not only is it there to alarm us that people come in or out, but it’s also a great thing for our safety.“
Do the alarms work? Why or why not?
Security#1: “I think the alarms do work, but sometimes they don’t. Of course, they go off, but does it really stop the students from leaving during school hours? No, so in my opinion, I think that the alarms don’t really work for students, but for other things, yes.“
Security#2: “I think the alarms don’t quite work because of how many students leave, even if there wasn’t an alarm, nothing would change.“
Security#3: “I think the alarms do sometimes work, but like I said, I’m not usually there when I see students leave.“
What happens if you catch a student trying to leave during school hours?
Security#1: ” We were usually told to just give them a warning and take them back to class instead of just giving them a referral or sending them to the office.“
Security#2: “ If we catch a student trying to leave, we try to talk to them, take them to their class or the office.”
Security#3: “I think I heard if we catch a student trying to leave, we would give them a warning and take them back to class.”
