I asked students multiple questions about their thoughts and opinions of PHS and how this school could do better.
(These were the questions that I asked)
1. Q: If you could change something about PHS, what would it be and why?
STUDENT 1: “I think we really need to improve a few things. First, the air conditioning hardly works in the building. Many people have portable fans instead, but with summer approaching, proper AC would be very helpful.
Additionally, we should put up more signs reminding everyone to keep the bathrooms clean. It would also be great to have some Febreze available because the bathrooms often have a bad smell. I understand that it’s a restroom, so it may not smell perfect, but it shouldn’t be consistently unpleasant.
Also, the phone policy is a bit too strict; there needs to be more flexibility. Lastly, while I appreciate that feminine hygiene products are available in some bathrooms, I think they should be stocked in every restroom.”
STUDENT 2: “The phone policy, because they become a little too strict about that, security takes it way too seriously.”
STUDENT 3: “Phone policy rules because some teachers take it too seriously.”
2. Q: What is your favorite thing about PHS?
STUDENT 1: “My favorite place to work is definitely the school store. I enjoy it because you learn so much, like how things operate behind the scenes and how to create fun drinks for everyone. It provides real-world experience that you can add to your resume, which is incredibly beneficial. I also love being involved in clubs like drama, art, and food nutrition, as well as participating in events. These activities allow you to learn a lot of things you might not have known before.”
STUDENT 2: “My favorite thing about PHS is how some teachers care about you, unlike others, some of them do look after you, they help you out, they talk to you, while other teachers just don’t care, all they do is teach, teach, teach.”
STUDENT 3: “Senior events or just events in general.”
3. Q: What is your least favorite thing about PHS?
STUDENT 1: “There are a lot of rude kids for no reason. I feel like maybe that should be fixed because a lot of times something is happening, and the teachers don’t do anything.”
STUDENT 2: “The phone policy, I hate it, and all those locked doors, like one entrance is crazy.”
STUDENT 3: “The bathrooms because the floors are always wet.”
4. Q: Do you enjoy attending PHS? Why or why not?
STUDENT 1: “I do like attending Pasco High School, but at the same time, I don’t. The only reason I don’t is because we have that phone policy, and the reason that I like attending is because most of my friends are here.”
STUDENT 2: “I kind of enjoy attending PHS just because my friends, that’s really the only thing I enjoy, I love some teachers, not all of them.”
STUDENT 3: “Yes, because I get to hang out with my friends, and some teachers are there to help you and support you.”
5. Q: Do you think the phone policy has helped you in any way?
STUDENT 1: “It did because I was that kid that cared about what others think, your priority should be school, because if you want to graduate you have to do all that work, and I feel like that really helped me so much but I feel like at the same time it still kind of bothers me because Pasco High employees be screaming for no reason.”
STUDENT 2: “That phone policy helped me in nothing, and it probably made me worse, it made everyone worse (more addicted to phones).”
STUDENT 3: “I think it has. I got my work done at that moment instead of procrastinating.”
6. Q: If you could describe PHS in one word, what would it be?
STUDENT 1: “I want to say Unique for sure.”
STUDENT 2: “Crazy, there’s too much happening, all these rules they have on us are crazy.”
STUDENT 3: “Pride.”
