With homecoming concluded and the homecoming court announced, I began to reflect on people’s perspectives regarding homecoming and its traditions. To gather various views, I explored online opinions and came across an article by Vivian Ealy for the Township Times in Pennsylvania about Manheim Township High School. In the article, she states, “A seemingly light-hearted tradition, this competition is both misogynistic and extremely old-fashioned.” Furthermore, she adds, “This practice is objectifying and outdated.”
After reviewing the online discussion, I decided to ask Mr. Lamb, the activities director and ASB advisor, about his perspective. I was interested not only in his views on homecoming but also in his personal experiences with it. Here are some key points from our conversation:
1. Are you in charge of homecoming?
– “I would say that I play a major part in homecoming, but it’s a joint effort between the administration, me, and the ASB executive council, or our advanced leadership class. This year, PHS dance has taken a big role as well.”
2. How was your homecoming?
– “Homecoming for me was just all about football. When we won, it was really fun, and when we lost, I was probably a little sad, but I still had a good time at the dance.”
Following these questions, I asked Mr. Lamb for his thoughts on homecoming court and homecoming in general.
3. What’s your view on an all-girls homecoming court?
– “Tradition at Pasco High means everything to me. We had the first homecoming celebration in the entire state of Washington, so I feel very honored that we still have the same traditions after more than 50 years.”
4. What’s your opinion on homecoming as a whole?
– “I love the spirit week. I’ve actually seen students dress up more as the week goes on. I have some freshmen who find the courage to participate by Thursday, and that’s one of my favorite aspects. The staff has done a great job at dressing up too.”
While some individuals believe schools should revise their traditional practices, others, like Mr. Lamb, appreciate and value the continuation of longstanding traditions.
