Starting in the 2024-2025 school year, possibly earlier, and continuing through the current 2025-2026 school year, over half of the seniors have begun wearing ‘kid backpacks’, the type typically worn by kindergartners, in various designs such as Barbie, Disney princess, and unicorn themes. I’m not quite sure why students started doing this, but I don’t think it’s a bad idea. I assume because it’s the students’ last year of high school, it’s a trendy way to express themselves, and it’s their last year of childhood. Also, I’ve seen some guys wear some backpacks as well. I’ve seen Bluey, Lightning McQueen, Mario, and Dinosaurs.
I interviewed four different students from Pasco High and asked them what design they have, why they chose it then asked if that’s better than a regular backpack.
Starting with Senior Aylin, “I have a pink fuzzy bear. I chose this one because I want to feel young, enjoy my last full year of being a kid. I honestly do think it’s better than a regular backpack because it has more color, is kid-friendly, and goes with some of my outfits.
Senior Ashley Iniguez “This school year, I have a ‘Bratz’ backpack with the character named ‘Jade. ‘ The backpack has pink and black. It was either that or a unicorn one, but since I grew up watching all seasons of Bratz, I obviously chose that. I think the kid’s backpack and a regular backpack feel the same, so I don’t compare.
Senior Liliana Barrera “I am wearing a pink Disney princess backpack because a lot of us girls watched that growing up, so it makes sense, it makes me feel a little younger, but I do miss wearing my black JanSport backpack because it’s basic and cute.
Lastly, Senior Natalie, “I have a black backpack with Spiderman. I picked this because it’s not basic; I wanted to be different. Yes, it is better than a regular backpack because I get a lot of compliments.
After interviewing all these senior students, it shows that everyone has their own favorite character and their own reason why they picked it. What they also have in common is that they’re doing it to enjoy the last year of high school, which is not wrong. I personally didn’t wear a kid’s backpack for my senior year, but if I did, I would’ve done my favorite Hello Kitty. I think this trend will go on for next year as well.
