Like most high school students, I enjoy listening to music during school. It helps me calm down and gives me the motivation to do my work. However, since the technology ban at our school, headphones have also been banned along with phones, which continues to irritate me. I started to wonder if anyone else feels frustrated by this. While I agree that phones can be a distraction and cause problems, I don’t believe headphones are an issue at all. In fact, I’m convinced that if we gave headphones a chance, they could improve students’ learning experiences.
To support my point, I asked three students different questions about their feelings regarding the use of headphones and whether they believe it brings benefits to us.
First, I asked one student, “Do you think headphones make students more distracted or more focused?” He replied, “For me personally, I’ve always been easily distracted. If the tasks I need to complete aren’t interesting or are genuinely boring, my brain seeks out something else to focus on. It’s a bad habit that has taken a toll on my grades, but when I use my headphones and listen to music, it does help me concentrate more on my assignments.”
Next, I asked a friend, “Do you think it would have a positive impact if the school allowed headphones?” She responded, “Absolutely! It would definitely help a lot of people stay focused. I often feel frustrated in 90% of my classes because they’re so boring, and when I’m listening to music, I actually want to pay attention.”
Lastly, I spoke to a former student about her views on the situation. She said, “I think it’s pretty foolish to take away headphones. I understand that phones can be distracting, but headphones do help with concentration, especially when used for music. I remember that even my old teachers encouraged us to use them to help us focus.”
I believe headphones should be allowed in school because they can help students like me and many others concentrate better and achieve more during our studies.
