Valkyrae Drama With RFLCT

On October 24, 2021, 100Thieves co-owner and YouTube streamer Rachel “Valkyrae” Hofstetter has gotten in quite a scandal involving her new project RFLCT skincare as she’s now co-founder of that product and had worked on the project for two years. When Valkyrae finally announced the big news, many of her fans and content creators reached out publicly and reacted to the situation as it circled around Twitter and YouTube. Valkyrae then spoke up in her recent livestream about the product and current situation as well as how she’s now bound in a contract with RFLCT until further notice.

RFLCT skincare products are claimed to protect your skin against the harmful effects of blue light that come from sitting in front of a screen all day. Blue light is said to be a form of visible, high-energy light that can only be slightly less powerful than UV light, which is emitted by the sun exposure and can cause eye and skin damage. Making a product that has to be tested thoroughly can be very much difficult to complete if the results don’t turn out how it’s supposed to. Multiple dermatologists pointed out that the ingredients given in RFLCT products aren’t capable of reflecting blue light.

During Hofstetter’s livestream on October 23rd, she was discussing how RFLCT would publish on the website how some of the research to the products were solved, but when the product was launched, they didn’t publicize the information. Moreover, Hofstetter got herself scammed into the situation to where she said she would want to get out of the contract with RFLCT if she could.

Following her livestream, she heavily mentioned her streamer friends and said, “This shows who my real friends are.” She also name called many popular content creators such as, Hasan “HasanAbi” Piker, Jacksepticeye, her good friend Imane “Pokimane” and others. Hofstetter said that among those people she didn’t receive support because when the scandal happened, they didn’t reach out to her publicly. Twitch megastar Felix “xQc” Lengyel went on to defend the streamers who were called out by Hofstetter and said during livestream, “If there’s a problem with the product and the fact-checking, that’s kind of like her job. If I did something similar, I’m solo. I don’t assume that the whole squad is on my side and now we’re fighting together. It’s just not how it works.”

What stroke Hofstetter fans and others was when she was continuously called out by name who supported her and who didn’t amongst her content creator friends, putting her in a bad position on the internet. Through her live chat, many people can be seen saying that her apology would’ve been better if it wasn’t livestreamed and instead thought through because she was just “pointing fingers” along her stream. Many of her fans still and will continue to support Hofstetter, but with great actions come bigger consequences.
