The debate between cats and dogs often comes up in conversations about pets, but does it really reflect a person’s personality? Some people believe that you should choose a pet that matches your own characteristics to ensure a harmonious relationship in the future. I talked to some of my classmates about their preferences.
I asked Joseline Zunun, a junior at PHS, for her opinion on the topic. She said, “In my opinion, I agree with what you said, Wendy. Having the same energy as your best friend is important; it eventually creates a connection. But it’s not just about energy; having a similar age to your four-legged friend could also be beneficial since you might share similar ways of thinking, even if it’s not exact because you’re human and they’re a dog or cat.”
During the interview, Joseline brought up the idea of age, which made me think more deeply about it. It resonated with me because I have a baby niece who grew up alongside her dog. They share a special bond and energy, and she adores her pet.
I asked Joseline a few simpler questions since she’s still young. For instance, would she trade her dog for a cat? She responded, “Oh no, I would never trade my dog for a cat. My dog is fun, and cats are slow.” This got me wondering if her opinion would change if she had grown up with a cat instead.

Across all the people I interviewed, there was a common sentiment: “Cats are more chill,” while dogs are described as “more fun and active.” I also interviewed Celeste Rodriguez, knowing she had owned a cat before. She shared, “Cats are very sweet; I really like to cuddle with them. They are easy to take care of and quite adaptable.”
At the end of the day, both dogs and cats can share that energetic vibe, but it ultimately comes down to the individual person. You can always influence their mood. Personally, as a dog lover, I believe that if you’re very active, like participating in sports or just enjoy being active, a dog would be the right companion for you. However, if you prefer something more laid-back, a cat might be the better choice. They are easy to relax with, generally cleaner than dogs, and don’t require constant attention or walks.
