“The Last Dance” is one of the best basketball documentaries ever. It is based on the Chicago Bulls and Michael Jordan’s last championship in 1998. That is where the name “The Last Dance” came from.
The Last Dance came out on April 19, 2020. This was a time when the whole world was in quarantine and all sports around the world were temporarily suspended. The sports world was eager for sports to be back in action.
The Documentary being released during that time helped it become a success. Throughout the whole ten episodes of the documentary, it averaged 5.6 million viewers, according to source SportsPro media. The Last Dance also won the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Documentary.
Although the documentary was a success and received greatly by millions of audiences around the world, it did receive some negative comments and backlash, especially from former teammates of Michael Jordan.
Scottie Pippen, Michael’s former teammate, didn’t have good things to say about the documentary. Pippen thought that the Documentary painted a bad picture of him and the rest of the team.
Pippen stated, “They glorified Michael Jordan while not giving nearly as much praise to me and my proud teammates”. Although the documentary faced backlash from Jordan’s former teammates, the positive reviews outweighed the bad reviews making “The Last Dance” a successful documentary.
According to ESPN “The Last Dance” was the most-watched documentary in ESPN’s history. The documentary does a great job of showing Michael Jordan’s career, his success, and also his struggles like losing his dad and his famous game “the flu game.” It also shows how great the Chicago Bulls team was and how they managed to win 6 championships, three-peated twice. It also touched on how the team was assembled and the background of the team.
The documentary had episodes especially dedicated to some of his former teammates and overall the documentary was a huge success. The documentary set a lot of records it won an Emmy. It was well-received all across the world. It was a well-directed documentary that showed all of Michael Jordan’s career, what made him and his teammates great, what led them to become a dynasty and win the City of Chicago 6 championships.
“The Last Dance” will forever be one of my favorite Basketball documentaries. As a fan of the sport, I think I can speak on behalf of all the fans of the NBA that this documentary will forever be legendary and well remembered for decades.
