Students who involve themselves in volunteering and community work really do help make an impact on society. There are many options available for students all over Tri-Cities, including nonprofit, school, and community programs.
YMCA of the Greater Tri-Cities is a youth-focused organization available for all students located in Richland. They have coaching spots available for youth sports, early childhood education, and sports events. This program helps students better their teaching skills, communication, and involves them in the community.
The Tri Cities Union Gospel Mission is a nonprofit Christian-based organization that involves giving back to the community, while being the only homeless center available in the Tri Cities area. At TCUGM, students can do activities such as helping in the kitchen with food preparation and meal service, assisting with chapel services, and transporting meals to the women’s center. This program teaches students skills like communication and teamwork.
Mid-Columbia Libraries is an organization all over Tri Tri-Cities available for students with volunteering events, where they can help with set up and take down, assist with activities, help direct participants, assist with program registration, help prepare for guest entertainers and performers, and help with crafts. This program encourages kids to read more, and volunteering is available for high school students, seniors, and anyone looking to get involved. Volunteering shows qualities like commitment, leadership, and initiative, which colleges are interested in.
Joining school clubs and programs is another way students can learn important skills. I interviewed Pasco High counselor Denneo Torres to ask her about the importance of students volunteering.
“How does volunteering and joining clubs and charity programs impact students’ mental health and academic skills?” I asked. “Participating in extracurriculars helps students feel more connected to their school. They develop a sense of belongingness, which helps students feel overall happier. They also begin to feel a sense of purpose when they play a role within a team or group. Academically, when students become more involved, they improve their time management, communication, and problem-solving skills. These are transferable skills that can be used throughout their time in school, and after,” she replied.
I then asked her what kinds of skills students gain: “Leadership, teamwork, communication, time management, and responsibility,” Torres said. “Students learn to play a role within a team, sometimes having to guide others. I then asked her, “How do students volunteering for charities make an impact on society?”, “When students volunteer, they help people in need, they put others’ needs before theirs, inspiring others to do the same and making a lasting positive impact,” Torres replied.
I asked her what clubs and programs were available for students at Pasco High. “We have a lot of clubs here at PHS. Some of the most popular are DECA, FCCLA, FFA, Link Crew, Leadership, MECHA, National Honor Society, Recycling, and WASCO. The rest you can find on this website- https://pascohigh.psd1.org/activities-athletics/clubs,” Torres replied.
I asked Ms.Torres, “What advice would you give a student thinking about joining a school club?”, “My advice would be to do something that you truly care about, or have a great interest in. When you care about something or have an interest in it, doing that activity becomes easier and more meaningful. I would also say to not be afraid, stay open-minded, and step outside of your comfort zone- this will allow you to grow as a human being,” she said.
Students can find club opportunities through school counselors, online websites, and teachers. “At Pasco High, if you want to volunteer, you could speak to Mrs. Zaragoza at the College and Career Center or with your school counselor,” Torres said.
This interview shows the benefits of students being a part of the community.
