Turning in schoolwork on time may sound simple, but it’s a challenge for many of our students, often making it one of the hardest parts of school. Every day, students juggle classes, homework, and many other things in their lives, so keeping up with deadlines can be difficult. With so much going on at once, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed, which can lead us to forget about assignments.
I asked Yaretzi Alvarez, a junior at Pasco High School, a few questions:
**Have you struggled to turn in late assignments?**
“I struggle to turn in late assignments when it involves tasks I’m not particularly passionate about. For instance, I dread turning in math assignments and often avoid them. However, when it comes to history or writing assignments, I complete them as soon as possible. My motivation to turn in assignments depends on how passionate I am about the subject.”
**What has made you turn in some of your assignments late?**
“There are a variety of factors. It could be that my life is too chaotic, that I don’t understand my teacher’s way of teaching, or that I am avoiding something I know will cause me stress.”
This shows that everyone struggles with turning in assignments at times, even though we are all trying to manage our lives.

Turning in assignments is very important for high school students because it impacts our grades and affects our chances of graduating on time, which is a dream for many of us. Teachers assess how we are doing in class based on our assignments, and failing to turn them in on time can make it seem like we are struggling.
Something my mom always says is, “How your grades look is how your life will look,” which I agree with, but we don’t all have the same resources in school.
If you’re unsure what to do or struggling, help is always available. Consider after-school tutoring; ask your teacher, and they will provide you with the information you need. There are teachers who would love to help you with your homework, or if you don’t understand your teacher’s teaching style, you might find a tutor who can explain things more clearly.
