LMSA, or Latino Medical Student Association, is a cohort here at PHS with the purpose to support students pursuing careers in healthcare. It serves to promote the development of future medical workers through mentorship, service, and education.
You can contact the advisor, Ms. Zargoza, if you are interested in joining or have any questions.
“LMSA is a group that all grades can join,” Ms. Zargoza said. “It’s for students that have an interest in the medical field and know that it’s what they want to go into. Students that are curious about it are also permitted to join.”
As a member you will get to meet other aspiring health students, learn about doctors and pre-med students, internships and scholarships, volunteer opportunities, and get to attend pre-health conferences. All students are welcome to join.
LMSA stands out because it partners with WSU Spokane, and can connect students with professionals and mentors from their campus. Members get to do hands-on activities such as learning how to insert IVs, perform CPR, and take blood pressure and vitals.
WSU Spokane is a campus of Washington State University located in Spokane. It’s the university’s branch for health science. Through the program, PHS students visit yearly.
“We take a trip to WSU Spokane every year around February,” Ms. Zargoza said. “When we’re there, we tour the campus and meet professionals.”
The group meets three times a year, which is mandatory for members. They also host E/I sessions for healthcare speakers and presentations.
Joining the Latino Medical Student Association connects you with a strong network of healthcare trainees and professionals. You’ll have opportunities to learn important skills and abilities, and be informed about different opportunities in medicine.
