Are Lockers Still A Thing?

Walking through the hallways of Pasco High, lined up are multitudes of lockers abandoned by our fellow classmates that range around 30+ years old. However, averaging the number of students in this school, many seen in the hallways walk around with their backpacks and at times sports backpacks. Such as the dance team crew who walk around with one backpack at the front and another on the back. Students playing tennis keep their tennis rackets all seven hours until practice or games. Even students that have gym keep a drawstring bag till their class. If students do all this, do we really need lockers altogether?

While bringing up the subject to my tablemates and Journalism teacher, they all had the same thought that over the years lockers have somewhat lost their mean of usage. Lockers are meant to keep all the weight from your back, not having your backpack, books, and other personal items but nowadays it seems like students don’t mind taking several pounds around for seven hours. While bringing up my story pitch to Mr. Hockaday, he told me that hallways even had their own grade level due to the closeness of classes and you would just leave your things and go to your lockers when it was officially time for another class and exchange your class books. Though, this isn’t really a necessity anymore because most students I spoke to said even with the seven minutes having everything with you and not going to a locker there’s enough time to walk around with friends then to class.

Students coming into a generation filled to the rim with newer technology every second, the need to keep large books in your backpack isn’t simply doable any longer due to having computers even our own cellphones that keep us better organized with less weight than have 3-4 books for classes. Along with each student having their very own computer that’s required daily in our classroom setting the need for teachers to give out majority of papers to students has decreased.

Altogether, with the amount of lockers we have at Pasco High many of these hallways are narrow and without lockers there would be large space to walk around as our school overcrowds with more students every year. The need for lockers has caught up to its final generation and are no longer needed in school settings and are just a money waste for schools and our school to keep and maintain to look “decent.”
