Data shows the average American reads four books a year. That is four books in twelve months, four books in three-hundred and sixty-five days, and four books in eight thousand, seven hundred sixty hours. The numbers decreased for the average amount an American reads a year compared to the year 1999, when the average American read 18.5 books a year. Research shows that the significant decline is due to multiple factors, but the most effective is digital entertainment. This makes complete sense. Digital entertainment offers a variety of genres and topics that people watch depending on their personal interests. There are movies and shows for kids, teenagers, adults, and even babies. What if I told you you could find your favorite shows and movies in a book? What if I told you that you could immerse yourself so deeply in the words that you feel like you have become part of them? Well, I have good news! Books can be a beneficial way to enjoy all the genres and topics you enjoy without being part of the average American who reads four books per year. It is a common misconception that books are prestigious, difficult to read, and slow-paced. You can find something you enjoy if you just take your time looking for the right book. Here, I have made a list to make it easier for you to find the right book based on your interests! My goal is to convince you to read it based on a single quote.
THRILLERS:
The Silent Patient:
“Once you name something, it stops you from seeing the whole of it, or why it matters. You focus on the word, which is just the tiniest part, really, the tip of an iceberg.”
Ward D:
“How does somebody get to the point where their brain stops functioning like a normal brain? That their reality completely breaks from the reality that every other person in the world lives in? And what’s to stop it from happening to anyone else?”
ROMANCE:
Better Than The Movies:
“I fell in love with teasing you in the second grade, when I first discovered that I could turn your cheeks pink with just a word. Then I fell in love with you.”
Magnolia Parks Series:
“The most beautiful boy in every room, the great love of my life, how many loves do you get in a lifetime? I remember wondering that. How many people will look at me like he does, not just like I’m the sun, but like I’m the whole universe.”
LITERARY FICTION:
Normal People:
“Marianne had the sense that her real life was happening somewhere very far away, happening without her, and she didn’t know if she would ever find out where it was or become part of it.”
Nothing Special:
“On the Metro, she thought about how easy it would be to step off somewhere else, disappear. It occurred to her that, for the whole of her life, she might never stop having that thought.”
DYSTOPIAN:
Shatter Me Series:
“I have a curse.
I HAVE A GIFT.
I’m a monster.
I’M MORE THAN HUMAN.
