Did you know our school has a total of twenty-five clubs available to ALL students?
Looking at our school’s website (Pascohigh.psd1.org) you might read through the list and find something that catches your eye and linked next to the club’s name you’ll find the managers’ information to contact for further information or questions.
Key Club, Fashion, leadership, Link Crew, Mariachi, Spike Squad, Ski Club, and more are common clubs students sign up for.
But have you heard about Pasco High’s DECA club?
DECA is a club for students who are interested in business and marketing. These students need to learn and gain knowledge and new professional skills to help prepare for “the real world”.
This club is currently being managed by Mr. Treviño, Mr. Callaway, and Ms. Schneider.
Not only are they managing a club, but they are also teachers here at PHS, teaching finance-related subjects.
“What does it take to be a DECA student?” I asked Ms. Schneider.
“The main requirement is that you are part of one of the business and marketing classes, because we give you the foundation you need to build your DECA career, especially if you want to compete,” Schneider replied.
Although there aren’t any requirements to be a part of DECA, there are some expectations: being reasonable with time, responsible, taking accountability, and making quick and smart decisions.
“What are some benefits to being a DECA student?” I asked.
“First of all, it’s fun!” She responded.
“We do more than just attend competitions; we do a lot of community service events, school events, so it gets you involved in your community and your school. You’d get to travel and experience new places and meet a lot of new people from literally all over the world if you get into nationals.” She added.
Some skills Ms. Schneider mentioned you may gain from being part of Deca include speaking, leadership, and workplace skills, as well as increased confidence.
Now, let me introduce you to another PHS DECA club manager.
Mr. Callaway was previously working as a judge for area competitions. He enjoyed getting to know what DECA students were about and was then asked to serve as a DECA coordinator. What he really enjoys most is going on trips, experiencing new things, and learning new skills.
“What are some skills you have gained throughout your journey so far working with DECA?” I asked him.
“I’ve learned to be more professional, how to present to other people, how to communicate with others, to have patience with my students, and how to think critically to come up with new and creative ideas.” Mr. Callaway responded.
All DECA encourages students who are enrolled in marketing or business classes to consider joining Pasco High School’s DECA club.
