Compostela, Nayarit

Nayarit is a very green state in the coast of Mexico that doesn’t differ too much from other states in Mexico like Sinaloa or Jalisco except for the fact that its smaller and lesser known.

I want to talk about the city of Compostela (its official name being Villa de Galicia de Compostela de Indias) which is the city my parents grew up in and the only city in Mexico.

It doesn’t take much to appreciate the beauty of Compostela, just a stroll around the city would take your breath away. The city has a big plaza in which lies a huge old church and inside it is beautiful, you can climb to the top and see the huge bells that are rung every time mass is about to start or after its ended. There are beaches close to the city (since the state lies in the coast) one of the beaches in particular called Guayabitos. This is my personal favorite because they allow you to take a boat ride to a nearby island (isla de coral) and go scuba diving to see all the colorful and weird fish and coral.

The city holds an event that goes on from the first Friday of December to the end of December and streets become flooded with things to do. There are all kinds of foods and little rides for kids and they also have games to play. It’s almost like a fair, but its in the middle of the city and its public. It’s not only the places or events in Compostela that make it beautiful. I think the people in the city play a great deal in that too, everyone is so humble and sociable and friendly, not to mention that usually they never ID. Cartels scare a lot of people from visiting anywhere in Mexico and rightfully so but that whole scene in Compostela is barely alive.

You may never have heard of the city or even the state but I highly recommend it as a bucket list travel spot.
